Creating Windows Server 2003 ESX Image

Create Windows 2003 Server - a basic image on ESX.

Run the wizard and pick options similarly to Windows XP. Reserve 1024M RAM memory and 10GB disk space (instead of 512M RAM and 8GB as for Windows XP).

Installation options

  1. Leave the default regional options. Enter user name Student from organization Education and Training
  2. Enter the volume license key from the datasheet.
  3. Pick the licensing mode Per Device or per user
  4. The computer name is srv2003, take password from the datasheet.

Windows Server Post-Setup Steps

  1. From VI Client attach the second installation CD.
  2. Start the Windows 2003, select disk "D", pick "Install Optional Windows Components".
  3. In "Windows Component Wizard" check "Active Directory Services". You see two messages, which you acknowledge by collecting OK:
    1. Message 1: Server for NIS can be installed only on a Domain Controller.
    2. Message 2: In order to install any ADFS component, Internet Information Services (IIS) must be installed.
  4. Click Finish and restart machine
  5. Disable "Internet Explorer's Enhanced Security Configuration"
    1. Select Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs
    2. Click Add/Remove Windows Components
    3. In the dialog Windows Components Wizard remove the checkmark next to Internet Explorer Enhanced Security Configuration
    4. Click Next and Finish
  6. Open Internet Explorer, set the homepage to about:blank
  7. Download and install Firefox browser, set its homepage to about:blank

Enable Active Directory Services

  1. Open Add or Remove Programs from Control Panel.
  2. Click Add/Remove Windows Components.
  3. Click Active Directory Services under Components, and then click Details.
  4. Verify that the Active Directory Application Mode (ADAM) check box is marked and then click OK. (If necessary, check it, and click Next to complete the installation).
  5. If an error message appears, make a note of the error, click Finish, and then review the Active Directory Application Mode (ADAM) event messages in Event Viewer.
  6. Select Start > All Programs > ADAM > Create an ADAM instance
  7. Select Next, pick A unique instance radio button.
  8. Name the instance "BlueTouchTraining".
  9. Leave the default port numbers - 389 (LDAP) and 636 (SSL).
  10. No, do not create an application directory partition
  11. This account (enter Administrator and its password); enable the account to run as a service
  12. Select ADAM administrator Currently logged in user (Administrator)
  13. Do not import LDIF files, click Next and Finish

Run Server Wizard

  1. Administrative Tools > Manage your server. Click "add/remove roles".
  2. Pick "Typical configuration for this server"
  3. In the "Active Directory" domain name write rix.training.bluecoat.local
  4. Pick the NetBIOS domain name as RIX, click Next.
  5. You should see the summary before installation:
    Run the Routing and Remote Access Server Setup Wizard (sets up routing)
    Install DHCP server (if required)
    Install Active Directory and DNS server (sets up this server as a domain controller)
    Create the following full domain name: rix.training.bluecoat.local
  6. Pick the infrastructure network connection for the internet connectivity, e.g. 10.120.29.69, read the messages that NAT and a basic firewall is configured. Press Next and Finish.
  7. If needed, edit the virtual machine settings and attach ISO file for installation CD1 to the CD-ROM drive to copy missing files. Close all programs and restart the machine.
